On View at Alabama Contemporary Art Center in Mobile, al
HURRICANE PARTY January 12, 2024 - April 20, 2024 Alabama Contemporary Art Center 301 Conti Street Mobile, Alabama 36602 CURATED BY 309 PUNK PROJECT AND JAMES BLACK Since the mid-1980s, Mobile, AL has been home to a resonant punk scene. Transitory in nature, as with any subculture, the scene in Mobile has cycled over the decades through fleeting phases and times of both abundance and scarcity. The thing about punk though, is within scarcity it innovates. All the DIY house shows, bands, art, zines, albums, mix tapes, and all the alternative venues and record shops that make for a ‘scene’ are impossible to list. Through a partnership with 309 Punk Project (Pensacola, FL), this exhibition aims to collect, archive, and preserve some of that lightning in a bottle. Supported by a series of calls for community members to come forward and donate Mobile-centric, punk ephemera, this collection represents a nearly four decade history of punk in the city. Guest Curators James Black of Mobile, and Scotty Satterwhite of 309 Punk Project, and all of the artists, have been working over the last two years to build a living archive of the Gulf Coast scene from Pensacola to West Mobile. Join us to revel in the past and fuel momentum of the next generation of punks in an ever evolving effort of mischief, alternative means, and mayhem.
